For years, people have had the ability to send HTML formatted messages to their mailing lists, instead of text messages. You probably know and recognize the difference.
A text e-mail message contains text and that’s it. There’s no formatting, no colors, images, or different text sizes. It’s just text, and that’s it. And e-mail messages allow you to embed pictures, links and have giant header text in the e-mail, which is better.
You might think HTML e-mails are better, but you’d be wrong. That’s right. Even years after the invention of HTML e-mails, text based e-mails are still superior. They’re still the best solution and that is the format you want to send your messages in with your autoresponder, even if you have an alternative.
Although HTML images look nice, they don’t display the same way on different e-mail clients. They still take a while to load and image based e-mails are the style of e-mail that spammers tend to use. You don’t want to look like a spammer, you don’t want to spend all that time making your messages look fancy, just say what you want to say. One argument I hear for sending HTML e-mails is image tracking. What this means is an image is placed inside any HTML e-mail you send, so that if someone opens up that e-mail, it will contact your web server and let it know that the e-mail has been at least opened and read.
While this used to be a good practice, most e-mail clients block images, which means that your tracking will be inaccurate anyway, and they’re blocked for a good reason, because spammers use tracking images to see if any of the e-mails they are sending to are legitimate e-mail addresses.
If you’re stuck with text based e-mails, what do you do instead, It’s a simple solution. You simply link to anything you want to show them. If you type a URL into a text based e-mail, any e-mail client is smart enough to know that that is a link, and it will make it clickable. That means if you want to show someone an image, link to the image. If you want to share a blog post or a video, link to the appropriate web page, and make your e-mail as short as possible, directing them to click on that link.Recommended ...
